Weejun 90 Larson Penny Loafers by G.H. Bass

A classic since 1936
In 1936, G.H. Bass introduced the Weejuns®—an American slip-on inspired by the shoes worn by Norwegian fishermen and farmers. Esquire editors had discovered the Norwegian-style shoes in Palm Beach and worked with G.H. Bass and New York retailer Rogers Peet to refine the design. Even the name is a nod to its inspirations: “Weejuns” is the playful short form of “Norwegians.” The 90 Larson model carries on this legacy, featuring a sturdy, lightweight treaded sole and the loafer silhouette that has remained unchanged for 90 years. The result looks fresh, is comfortable to wear, and pairs well with denim, dress pants, and chinos.

Traditional Craftsmanship
The loafer is crafted using a tubular moccasin construction. The leather is pulled tightly around the last, threaded under the foot, and brought together at the toe. It is then sewn by hand. This requires a great deal of experience, especially at the toe, where the tension must be just right. Every pair has been crafted this way for 90 years. The leather is selected to be sturdy enough to hold its shape and supple enough to ensure comfort.

Saddle and Beefroll Stitch
The saddle with the small slit is the defining feature of the penny loafer and gave it its name. In the 1950s and ’60s, the Ivy League generation liked to slip a penny into the slit—supposedly for an emergency call from a payphone. The beefroll stitch has been a part of the design since the very beginning. The rows of stitching run around the ends of the vamp and connect it to the upper leather. It looks great and keeps the vamp securely in place, even when the leather moves.
