The DOUK-DOUK is a legendary knife whose history fills books. It is a very efficient knife of ingeniously simple construction and consists of only six parts: a blade made of fine-grained carbon steel, a handle made of folded sheet metal, the ressort (back spring), which has the task of locking the blade in the open or closed position, two rivets and a small bracket at the end of the handle to which a lanyard can be attached.

Gaston Cognet came up with the idea for this knife in 1928. DOUK-DOUK was to be a knife that was so inexpensive that anyone could buy it. At the same time, it had to be sturdy and versatile and useful for all everyday tasks, including work in the field or garden, and if you lost it, it should be easy to get over the loss, because you could and should be able to buy a new knife for a few francs ...
This idea of creating inexpensive, functional knives must have been in the air at the time, because in the Rhône-Alpes region, Joseph OPINEL had previously developed his famous knife with the same intention from the ALPIN, a knife that was widely used in the region and was familiar to him and the alpine farmers in the Savoy. Nevertheless, Gaston Cognet initially had little success with the DOUK-DOUK in France. But it sold all the better in the colonies and especially in Micronesia.
Curious, he decided to travel there and on one of the islands he discovered the mythical figure, a ritual dance mask made of grasses and feathers called DOUK-DOUK, which fascinated him so much that he named his knife after it and from then on embossed it on the handles of his knives as a lucky charm. Today it has become the trademark of genuine DOUK-DOUKs.

So who is to thank, the mask or Gaston's diligence? After success in Micronesia came success in the North African colonies and finally they were also a success in his home country of France and at home in every pocket. Today, the DOUK-DOUK is an icon, a cult object with a large fan base. It is part of the collections in many museums around the world.
Gaston's grandson Pierre still makes the original DOUK-DOUK today, in the same workshops where his grandfather worked and partly with the same tools and (old German) machines of his forefathers.
